Pure horse fat in small pieces, for highly active pets and more... Fats are one of the most important energy sources in the metabolism of dogs and cats. By having enough fat during feeding, you guarantee a good supply of energy for your four-legged friend. Fat is a vital component to optimal pet health – it is essential for nutrient absorption, nutrient transportation, and is the ideal source of energy for dogs and cats.
There are just three sources of energy or calories for your pet: Protein, Fat and Carbohydrates.
- Protein provides calories and also the building blocks for virtually every structure in your dog’s body. They build muscles and soft tissue, skin, hair and nails, blood cells, neurotransmitters and the enzymes that control virtually every action in the body.
- Fat also provides energy — and it does much more than just store fat for energy. Fats function as chemical messengers, they form the membranes of all the body’s cells, they help the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K), and they control hormones and play a huge role in inflammation.
- Carbohydrates provide energy only — they play no other role in the body.
So getting proteins and fats right is critical to your pet’s health — they’re the building blocks for good nutrition. And getting the fats right means not just the amount of fat, but the balance.
Fat has a bad reputation and many marketing schemes have its way of demonizing fat while avoiding the important facts. Many pet parents have a concern with feeding fat because of the potential for pancreatitis. It is important to know that feeding raw fat within a raw diet should not raise any risks for pancreatitis in a healthy dog. The difference lies within feeding raw fat and not cooked fat – cooked fat is a concern for pancreatitis and should be avoided. Additionally, fat is often attributed to making pets overweight or even obese. However, fat does not cause obesity in pets – overfeeding and lack of physical activity are two main components in pet obesity.
Ketogenic Diet (Keto)
Keto is a high fat, moderate protein, very low-carbohydrate diet. A ketogenic diet focuses on providing the body with dietary fats as a source of energy instead of carbohydrates. This diet is used for therapeutic benefits for pets who have been diagnosed with cancer. The idea behind this diet is to switch the body’s natural fuel source from carbs to fats. Healthy cells can use either carbohydrates or fats to produce energy. If a diet is mostly carbs (like kibble), the body does one of two things: it converts the carbohydrates to glucose for fuel... or stores the glucose in the liver as glycogen.
But if a diet mainly provides fat – and glycogen stores are low – the body converts that fat into ketones. Ketones are short-chain fatty acids that the body then uses to produce energy. This is a natural process that induces a healthy metabolic state called ketosis and begins usually 3 to 4 days after removing carbs and sugars from a diet. In many studies, the ketogenic diet has shown to significantly lower blood glucose. This can trigger anti-inflammatory processes that enhance cellular function and improve overall pet health.
This diet works because the growth rate of certain cancerous tumors either slows down or diminishes completely due to the body burning fats. The science behind this treatment is new but shows great promise for the treatment of cancer in humans and dogs.
